December Round the World! Bulletin Board Idea
I wanted to share the bulletin board I created to advertise for my upcoming concert “December Round the World” which features my fourth and fifth graders. I didn’t want to spend too much time on this bulletin board and wanted it to be fairly clean and simple. At the same time, I wanted it to stand out and really get kids’ attention. Most of all, I wanted to find cool and simple clip art that featured kids of all different shapes, sizes, and cultural backgrounds. The concert celebrates winter traditions from around the world including Christmas, Las Posadas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, St. Nicholas Day, and more. Why not advertise with images of children from all around the globe?
I featured these clip art images in my “Five Favorite Pins of November” blog post and I’ll say it again: I love these images! The kids run the gamut of cultural backgrounds and have different heights and body types. There’s even a student in a wheel chair (which I know will mean a lot to my students who are also in wheel chairs), a kid with braces, and a kid with glasses. I like to find graphics that are inclusive of all people and teach kids to accept diversity. So often in musical kids books or song lyrics the faces and names are so white and European. This set of clip art is perfect and will be something I come back to use again and again. Well worth the $4.
In case you’d like to learn more about the show, here’s the description (from Hal Leonard): “Celebrate December traditions and discover the special preparations for the Chinese New Year; the German St. Nicholas Day tradition of a pickle hidden in the Tannenbaum; the seven principles of Kwanzaa from African ancestors; the miracle and lights of Jewish Hanukkah; the festive atmosphere of Mexico’s Las Posadas; and Christmas American-style. Share the universal messages of peace, hope, and goodwill in your school and community throughout the entire year.”
