The beginning of each new year brings lots of fun challenges and exciting opportunities. Right now, my brain is swimming with ideas about programs, scheduling, sharing resources with other teachers in my district, procedure for behavior, trying out new techniques, purchasing, and so much more. With all of those things to think about, I decided that my first bulletin board shouldn’t be on my list of “important stuff to consider.” I needed to get that planning out of the way so that I had time to think about everything else. That why, even though I haven’t even set foot in my building yet, and I already have my first year hallway bulletin board planned! How great is that! Now I’m free to consider all the other important aspects of the beginning of the school year. I’ll share with you what I’m going to do for the beginning of the year and then post up some fun resources that I’ve found from some of my favorite teacher/author friends!
What Arrrrrgh We Doing this Year??
To get us back into the swing of things I created this set of Pirate themed posters that I think my kids are going to love! The main poster/prompt asks the broad question “What ARRRRRRGH we doing this year” and then each poster says something like “We ARRRRRGH going to sing on our own and with others” or “We ARRRRRGH going to evaluate music and music performances.” I realized after I made this set that I could use them year round and not JUST for the beginning of the school year. They’d make a fun focus statement for my kiddos instead of a basic and dry “I Can” statement. The students would probably be much more interested in looking for a piratey focus question instead of one that’s just written out on a sentence strip on the board. And heck, they (and by “they” I mean “I”) love any opportunity to talk like a pirate.
Here are a couple samples so you can see what the posters look like. Just click the image to see a bigger version of the image. Click HERE to see the full set.
